Lohuizen wint prijs en richt agenschap op
Gelauwerd fotograaf Kadir van Lohuizen kreeg in Perpignan de Visa d'Or uitgereikt en lanceerde met enkele internationale fotografen van naam het nieuwe fotoagentschap NOOR.
Van Lohuizen won de Visa d'Or voor een reisreportage in de Tsjaad in opdracht van Human Rights Watch.

Going back to Iraq was not an easy choice. I had been twice already. The first time was for the invasion in 2003. The second was in 2004 for a battle in Fallujah that ensued after four U.S. contractors were killed and hung from a bridge. Each trip had been more perilous than the last and I thought that maybe I'd had enough.
But while talking with writer David Zucchino in New Orleans during the Hurricane Katrina disaster he mentioned the story he was trying to put together in Iraq. His premise was to show the medical care wounded soldiers receive by telling the intimate stories of just a few select individuals. It was a fresh and important story that had yet to be told. I immediately told him that I wanted to help him tell the story visually. David had already spent months jumping through hoops trying to set it up and it was almost another two months before we got clearance to head over there.

After the almost biblical inundation that followed Hurricane Katrina, the dark side of New Orleans became America's nightmare. The anarchy and lawlessness that erupted as the result of the nation's disregard for the suffering of its fellow citizens confirmed our deepest fears about the fragility of civilization, and caused us to question the strength of the fabric that binds our society. The images of despair and turmoil that came one upon the heels of another brought us face-to-face with the structural weaknesses of America that are the societal equivalent of the breeches in the levees we thought protected us. Here was appalling evidence of the inequality, racism and violence that are with us daily, but which we choose to ignore rather than remedy."

Dam opnieuw opgebroken
Op het ogenblik worden delen van de Dam opnieuw bestraat. Voor de Bijenkorf is een groot deel afgezet waardoor het verkeer vanaf het Rokin niet meer rechtstreeks het Damrak op kan, maar voor Krasnapolski en achter de Bijenkorf langs moet.

In de zomermaanden, tussen 10 juli en 28 augustus, kan bij Spaarnestad Fotoarchief/SFA een bijzondere tentoonstelling bezocht worden met fotowerk van fotograaf Erich Lessing. Met een ruime selectie reportagefoto’s uit de periode 1948-1973 weerspiegelt Memories of Time de uitgesproken visie van deze Magnum-fotograaf op thema’s zoals: het naoorlogse Europa, politieke machtsspelen, de arbeidende mens, het houvast van geloof en rituelen.

Spattend Water

De zomer van 2005 blijft nat. Op maandag 25 juli leek de hemel telkens weer open te breken. Rond twee uur stonden overal in de stad grote plassen. Voor sommigen was het lol, voor een enkeling sjagerijn.
Passerende fietsers bij een telkens weer moeilijke passage na een kletterbui op de Marnixstraat nabij het raamplein rond twee uur des middags.

Schip en vliegtuig
Op 7 juli 2005 werd het onheilspellende nieuws over de aanslagen in Londen mij te veel. Ik pakte de auto en reed naar de lege Ceres terminals bij de nieuwe Amerika haven. Een groot schip lag voor anker en donkere wolken pakten zich samen, vliegtuigen stegen op.

De Dood op de Dam
Een paar uur na de moord op theo van Gogh waardde de dood rond op de Dam. Van de moordplaats opweg naar huis trof ik hem zwervend over het lege plein. Toen ik hem aansprak kwam er een paardentaxi langs op weg de schemerige stad in.
