Newsnight25
BBC NEWS | "The current and all past Newsnight editors chose a film or interview that stood out during their editorship of the programme. Watch and find out more about their choices."
Newsnight started 25 years ago. Congratulations from The Amsterdam Post for one of the Best news programs on my screen.
Serious journalism and reporting America
BBC NEWS | "In the past 25 years the United States has frequently been described as Britain's 'indispensable ally'. It has certainly been indispensable for Newsnight.
If all serious journalism in one way or another ends up being a commentary on power - it could hardly be otherwise. The most important power centre is - obviously - Washington.
What America does, says and is, has for years been at the core of much of our diplomatic, military, political and economic coverage. But the way this works has changed hugely, as a result of technological developments."
Nice story on the changes in reporting from the US from BBC Newsnight journalist Gavin Esler.

Alarm at new climate warning
BBC NEWS | "Global temperatures could rise by as much as eleven degrees Celsius, according to one of the largest climate prediction projects ever run.
This figure is twice the level that previous studies have suggested.
The scientists behind the project, called climateprediction.net, say it shows there's no such thing as a safe level of carbon dioxide."
Eleven degrees rise in temperature, means Holland will be a swamp again. No more integration debates, building dikes will be the only reasonable thing to argue about.

Blogging, Journalism & Credibility
Cyber Law Harvard | Lots to digest from the Blogging Journalism & Credibility conference. Check out the Bloglines aggregator and Dave?s aggregator of people blogging it, a del.icio.us link feed, transcripts and audiofiles from the conference, and the IRC chat transcripts as well. Not everything?s posted yet, but will be soon. Audio coming Monday, hopefully. Note that Wikinews now has a page on our conference. (hat tip to Sandhill Trek)
A learned conference on blogging results in more blogs on blogging blogging it away, trying to ultimately compete as an apple competes with an orange, creating more and more niches in which every blogger creates its own credibility, unchecked by the world, but creating the Blog database as the Bloggers memory.
G8-Plus Group needed to tackle climate change
ippr - press releases | "As chair of the G8, the Prime Minister should seek agreement to create a G8-Plus Climate Group to engage the US and major developing countries in action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to a high-level taskforce established by the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr), the Centre for American Progress and the Australia Institute.
In its report out tomorrow (Tuesday), the International Climate Change Taskforce concludes such a group would provide a way for G8 countries and other major economies - including India and China - to take action that would lead to large-scale reductions in emissions. The G8-Plus Climate Group would pursue partnerships to achieve immediate deployment of existing low-carbon energy technologies, including agreements to shift agricultural subsidies from food crops to biofuels and promote sales of highly efficient cars."

Ayaan Hirsi Ali in Buitenhof
Rottenberg als go between is niet geheel bevredigend.

NIC - Mapping the Global Future: Introduction
The international order is in the midst of profound change: at no time since the formation of the Western alliance system in 1949 have the shape and nature of international alignments been in such a state of flux as they have during the past decade. As a result, the world of 2020 will differ markedly from the world of 2004, and in the intervening years the United States will face major international challenges that differ significantly from those we face today. The very magnitude and speed of change resulting from a globalizing worldregardless of its precise characterwill be a defining feature of the world out to 2020.

Report of the
National Intelligence Council's
2020 Project
Thinking about the future. Never a waste of time. The Americans are preparing to remain the dominant global power.

CBS News Draws Ire of Bloggers
The New York Times | "The handling of documents appears to have tripped up CBS News again, and once more bloggers have provided instant - and biting - critiques of the incident.
After an independent panel published its findings on the use of unverified documents relating to President Bush's National Guard duty on '60 Minutes Wednesday,' the entire 234-page report was made available on the CBS News Web site and that of the law firm hired to handle the inquiry, Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham. But several Web sites noted that the posting of the report had been altered two days after it was placed on the Web page."
The original report was made impossible to cut and paste. From www.rathergate.com it is still possible.

Europe reaches new frontier – Huygens lands on Titan
Esa News | Today, after its seven-year journey through the Solar System on board the Cassini spacecraft, ESA’s Huygens probe has successfully descended through the atmosphere of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, and safely landed on its surface.
The first scientific data arrived at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany, this afternoon at 17:19 CET. Huygens is mankind’s first successful attempt to land a probe on another world in the outer Solar System. “This is a great achievement for Europe and its US partners in this ambitious international endeavour to explore the Saturnian system,” said Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESA’s Director General.

Can We Save Iraq? No, but the Iraqis Can
The New York Times | "s there any way this can still work? Is there any plausible scenario for how Iraq can turn into a functioning society?
These are the questions I've been throwing at government officials, military analysts and other wise heads over the past few weeks. Their answers, both uplifting and depressing, suggest that if we are lucky, the near future in Iraq will come in three phases."
David Brooks offers a realistic three fase picture of the best we can hope for in Iraq.

Are Blogs the New Journalism
Oreillynet | "The way TIME magazine saw it in December, 2004 was the start of a 'golden age' of blogging -- the rapid-fire web publishing scheme where anyone can publish their rants, photos or detailed reporting on the web in a matter of seconds. While blogging has been around for four or five years, the combination of the hotly contested election and the growth in popularity of blogging tools meant that blogging had hit critical mass.
Before this year, says writer Lev Grossman, 'blogs kept a relatively modest profile, and the mainstream media could comfortably treat them like amateur productions that could never compete with real news organizations.' But their power has been growing. In 2002 a liberal blog called Talking Points Memo pushed for Trent Lott's resignation as Senate majority leader. In 2004, Russ Kick obtained photos of US soldiers' coffins coming back from Iraq. 'The next day they were on the front pages of newspapers around the world,' says Grossman. "

On December 23, 2004, the Dutch Ministry of the Interior published a 60-page report entitled From Dawa* to Jihad. Prepared by the Dutch general intelligence service (AIVD), it describes radical Islam and examines how to meet its threat to Dutch society. *Dawa means to invite non-Muslims to accept the truth of Islam. ABC News: People of the Year: Bloggers
ABC News: "— A blog — short for "web log" — is an online personal journal that covers topics ranging from daily life to technology to culture to the arts. Blogs have made such an impact this year that Merriam-Webster named it the word of the year.
"There's a blog for every niche. There's a blog for every interest," said technology writer Xeni Jardin, who co-edits the blog boingboing.net. "

SUDAN: Final peace pact to be signed in Nairobi on Sunday
OCHA IRIN | "African leaders and other world dignitaries will gather in Nairobi on Sunday to witness the signing of a comprehensive peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM/A), Kenya's regional cooperation
The pact is expected to end more than two decades of civil war that has killed hundreds thousands of people, displaced many others and prevented development in southern Sudan."
Aceh's Hard-Hitting Newspaper Survives
Netscape News | "The tsunami smashed into the offices of Aceh's only newspaper with awesome force, picking up its two huge printing presses like toys and tumbling them into the parking lot. The human toll was worse: 100 staff are feared dead.
But just six days after the disaster, Serambi Indonesia - which has survived threats from both the government and rebels for its hard-hitting coverage of this war-torn corner of Indonesia - was back in circulation.
``Cholera is threatening our refugees,'' read the banner headline of the first edition, a slimmed down version printed in Aceh province's second city, Lhokseumawe, and handed out free.
Also on the front page: a telephone number and message urging employees to call in and let the editors know they were still alive. "
