The
Dutch Government suspends payments to UN Drug body
Amsterdam, 17 5 2001
In a strong statement, the Dutch government annouces the suspension of the annual non- obliged payments, which amounts to 5 million Euro annually, to the UN International Drug Control Program. The United Kingdom is the only other country that awaits management change in the UNDCP before resuming payment. Australia, Canada, the United States and France are restricting there payments.
The Dutch Government will resume payment after Director Arlacchi has shown the will to reform the organisation, and after two upcoming reports have been released. One from an external accountants and one report from a special UN Inspector.
In question are the non- obliged payments to UN organisations.
The Dutch policy towards these payments rests on general upheld management standards. They must operate on the basis of transparency, cooperation, effectiveness and they must be result oriented.
With this action of the Dutch Government the pressure on Director Arlacchi is growing. It will take time and effort for him to rebuild confidence. It is most likely that he will have to resign if other countries will start criticising him as openly as has been done by this statement.
