Dean quits US presidential race

Former Vermont governor Howard Dean has announced that he is dropping out of the race to be the Democrats' candidate for the White House.
Mr Dean told a news conference that his candidacy was over but his campaign for change continued.

"What we showed is that by standing up and telling the truth... you could get the support of voters," he said.

Mr Dean's decision to pull out looked inevitable after he finished a distant third in Tuesday's Wisconsin primary.

Kerry puts his stamp on the south

US Democrat front-runner John Kerry has strengthened his position, winning the Virginia and Tennessee primaries.
The victories show Mr Kerry, a northerner, can attract voters from the states of the Old South, even running against southern rivals.

Mr Kerry has now won 12 out of 14 state Democratic contests, and his closest rival, John Edwards, lags well behind.

As the results came in, Wesley Clark decided to pull out of the race, according to his aides.
