Leden EP starten actie tegen Straatsburg

Enkele leden van het Europese Parlement, waaronder Cecilia Malmström van de Zweedse Liberale Fractie, gesteund door de Lousewies van der Laan, zijn een actie gestart om 1 miljoen handtekeningen te verzamelen om het verhuis circus tussen Brussel en Straatsburg te stoppen.

Enkele malen per jaar verhuist het gehele Europese Parlement van Brussel naar Straatsburg om daar te vergaderen. Deze operatie kost jaarlijks 200 miljoen Euro.

Er zijn al vele pogingen ondernomen om hier een einde aan te maken. Met deze actie hoopt initiatiefneemster Cecilia Malmström genoeg handtekeningen bijeen te krijgen om via een burgerinitiatief definitief te kiezen voor Brussel als vestigingsplaats van het Europees Parlement.

The Dutch public are discontent: voting en masse against the EU Constitution — a far cry to the mid-20th century when the Netherlands was a founding member of the European Union's predecessor.

A worrying 61.6 percent of voters said no compared with 38.4 percent who backed the constitution in the 1 June referendum, a margin which stunned the political elite in The Hague and sent shock waves across the continent."

Nederland stemt nee na Franse non

Na de Franse afwijzing van het grondwettelijk verdrag zijn de tegenstemmers bij het Nederlands referendum in hun mening gesterkt, volgens onderzoek van Maurice de Hond. Leek voor de Franse stemming er een lichte omslag richting een ja-stem, deze is definitief afgebroken. De kans van goedkeuring door de Nederlandse bevolking is vrij klein geworden. De teller staat op 59% voor en 41% tegen.

"De Franse bevolking stemt met een solide 55% tegen het grondwettelijk verdrag. De nee-stem kwam voornamelijk van extreem links en rechts, aangevuld met een meerderheid van de traditionele socialistische kiezers.

Met het afwijzen van het belangrijke grondwettelijk verdrag is niet alleen Frankrijk in een grote politieke crisis terecht gekomen, maar het gehele Europese project wankelt."

EUOBSERVER / COMMENT - Those on the French Left who vote non to the Constitution cannot simply be dismissed as loony-lefties, nostalgic for France’s pivotal role in Europe or clamouring against the evils of globalisation and neo-liberalism.

They have a serious point to make about alternative economic visions of Europe. The main Eurozone economies have experienced low growth, high unemployment and shrinking social benefits for the better part of a decade. At present, French unemployment stands at 10%, Germany’s growth was negative in the fourth quarter of 2004, Italy is in recession and the ‘Dutch miracle’ has collapsed. Little wonder voters are disillusioned. Rekindling an economic debate about the future of Europe is an urgent task; it will last well beyond the referendum and needs far wider public discussion. "

Referendum: Voorstemmers winnen terrein

AP Report | Maurice de Hond twijfelt of het genoeg is

oor het eerst sinds maanden stijgt het aantal voorstemmers van het referendum over het Grondwettelijkverdrag. Volgens opiniepeiler maurice de Hond zal dit alleen niet voldoende zijn om het Grondwettelijkverdrag goed te keuren. Afgelopen zaterdag zei 60% van de kiezers, die het al zeker weten, tegen te gaan stemmen en 40% voor.

Sindsdien is er sprake van een trendbreuk. De opkomst stijgt naar 46% (was 43%) en het aandeel voorstemmers steeg naar 43%, tegen 57% tegenstemmers. Om het referendum te winnen zullen de voorstemmers massaal op moeten komen. Doen zij dit niet dan wint de tegenstem en is het Grondwettelijkverdrag van de baan.
